Ashley Judd decided to heal her inner child for her 58th birthday.
The '90s star recreated her 12th birthday party as a nostalgic throwback to her childhood.
"We laughed, frolicked, square danced… and ate a dream cake any 12-year-old would adore," Judd wrote of the celebration.
Ashley Judd is proving that you're never too old to channel your inner child.
In April, the Heat actress celebrated her 58th birthday with friends and family. But rather than throwing a classic adult party or hosting a dinner, Judd opted to recreate her 12th birthday party to honor her younger self. A month later, she reflected on the experience in a heartfelt Instagram post, encouraging followers to follow suit.
"On my 58th birthday, my inner 12-year-old was ready to receive love, care, attunement, delight, protection, and provision," Judd wrote on Tuesday. "Have you ever considered, from your adult perspective, restaging for your sweet inner child an experience she either never had at all? Or an experience that did not unfold with the safety and attention it should have?"
She continued, "I deeply enjoy doing this from a loving inner-parent perspective for my inner family. Many of us grew up with unmet needs. Today, as adults, we can listen carefully to those missings, identify what happened that should not have happened — and, crucially, what did not happen that should have happened — supplying that, now, with love and humor to ourselves."
The post was accompanied by a carousel of photos, which see Judd smiling beside a birthday cake decorated for a 12-year-old, performing karaoke with friends, and square-dancing outdoors.
"I don’t remember any of my birthdays growing up," Judd wrote. She noted that while she has fond memories of attending 6th grade in 1979, returning home after school was a different experience. "At home? There was no parent (or adult) supporting, nurturing, guiding and reinforcing my learning, delighting in, or protecting that little girl."

She added, "This past weekend, alongside sensitive, playful people who also relish carefree timelessness, we restaged my 12th birthday party. We backfilled what was always missing and no longer is, thanks to vulnerable imagination. We laughed, frolicked, square danced, took a Scopes Monkey Trial True or False quiz (including quite a bit Mrs. Minor did not cover in 1979), and ate a dream cake any 12-year-old would adore."

Judd shared that the celebration also involved anonymously writing down 6th grade shames and using "vintage Goody hairbrushes to sing unabashedly into the mirror."

Judd, the daughter of country singer Naomi Judd, has previously discussed her tumultuous childhood. In 2024, Ashley spoke at the Biden Administration's White House event for the National Strategy for Suicide Prevention, sharing that her early experiences led to an "onset of childhood depression" and the "feeling of not wanting to be here."
With time and treatment, Judd was able to heal. As she put it, she was able to have a "different outcome than [her] mother," who died by suicide at age 76.
"I've been in good recovery for 18 years," Judd shared. "I carry a message of hope and recovery."
