Marki and Ben Sammon got married in Minneapolis on Jan. 26

The couple planned for a courthouse ceremony, only to discover that they mistakenly booked the DMV

"They handled it with a lot of humor. Once it clicked, everyone got a good laugh about it," the wedding photographer tells PEOPLE

A bride and groom had a hilarious venue mix-up.

When Marki and Ben Sammon, both 27, walked inside Midtown Exchange in Minneapolis on Monday, Jan. 26, the couple planned to wed in a civil ceremony in a courthouse at the mixed-use building, but quickly realized they had mistakenly booked their local Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV).

"It was genuinely an honest mistake," the wedding photographer and videographer, Katie Carlson, tells PEOPLE. "The bride's mom and I later joked that we both asked people upstairs where we were supposed to go, and were told the DMV downstairs. We were confused, but didn’t question it — we just rolled with it. The bride later joked, 'I wish it was a funnier story — I honestly just didn’t realize what I was doing.' "

The next day, Carlson, 27, shared a video compilation of the mishap on TikTok, writing, "POV: your client thought she booked a courthouse but it's really the DMV." The clip amassed about 155,000 views and 20,000 likes.

The top comment was "ppl waiting for their licenses watching this happen 😂" alongside a funny meme of an individual filming with their cellphone. Carlson reveals that there actually were a few onlookers who appeared amused by the unexpected wedding ceremony happening before them as they waited for typical DMV services, such as license renewals and vehicle registration.

"You could tell some were entertained by what was clearly a much more celebratory and dressed-up moment than they expected to see there," Carlson recalls. "As we were leaving, the bride, Marki, said to several people who were congratulating them, 'Thanks so much for coming.' "

Marki and Ben laughed off the wedding mishap and still went through with the ceremony."They handled it with a lot of humor," Carlson says. "Once it clicked, everyone got a good laugh about it."

Carlson also tried to be "very go-with-the-flow and human" to keep the couple comfortable, though she admits that capturing wedding content at a DMV was a first for her.

"I just treated it like a normal part of the day, while obviously giggling with them during the slightly cringey but hilarious moments of the DMV musical counters," Carlson says.

Carlson posted the mix-up on social media because it showcased "such a uniquely human moment."

"Unexpected, funny, and very real," she says. "Weddings are usually portrayed as perfectly planned, but moments like this show how meaningful and memorable the day can still be, even when things don’t go exactly as expected."

She continues, "Seeing it get the attention it deserves has been fun, because we had a feeling there would be others who could relate."
