*Supergirl* might be a blockbuster superhero film, but its box office numbers are anything but epic.

Now, after the highly anticipated film flopped across its opening weekend with an estimated $68 million in global ticket sales on a reported budget of around $170 million, a DC Studios boss has weighed in on the disappointing numbers.

“While *Supergirl* didn’t meet our box office expectations, it’s just one component of a broader, long-term strategy at DC Studios that we remain confident in," Peter Safran, co-chairman and co-chief executive of DC Studios, told the *New York Times** *after the film's opening weekend.

Initial expectations had the film projected to earn under $55 million from Friday through Sunday, though a weak $18.2 million start heading into the weekend lowered predictions as the weekend carried on.

Critics also weren't thrilled with the Craig Gillespie-directed film, which currently stands at a rating of 49/100 on Metacritic, though the Rotten Tomatoes audience score stands at 76 percent based on over 2,500 verified user ratings on the site.

The film represents a new era for DC, with actress Milly Alcock leading the film as the titular character, Matthias Schoenaerts playing Krem, David Corenswet reprising his role as Superman, and Jason Momoa as Lobo.

*Supergirl* has a long way to go before its box office total catches up to that of Corenswet's *Superman*, the 2025 James Gunn-directed hit that posted just under $620 million worldwide on a $225 million budget.

In a prior interview with* *, Alcock celebrated the complexity of her character as she made the jump from the cast of *Game of Thrones* prequel series House of the Dragon and into the DC Universe.

"The biggest battle that she's had to face is with herself," Alcock said before the film's release. "There's something incredibly accessible within that; there's something incredibly relatable within that. I think that audience members will feel that this is a superhero that reflects who they are as opposed to who they're told to be. I think that that's really refreshing."
