Warner Bros. announced Tuesday, Sept. 29 that Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest will hit theaters on June 1, 2029, marking the first feature film set in the world of HBO’s blockbuster fantasy franchise. The Hollywood Reporterwas one of the outlets to break the news.

No cast has been announced yet, and there is currently no word on when production will begin.

As its title suggests, the movie will center on King Aegon I Targaryen, the first king of the Targaryen dynasty and the man who conquered and united Westeros roughly 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones.

Known as Aegon the Conqueror, he arrived in Westeros with his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys and their dragons, Balerion, Vhagar and Meraxes. Together, they began the conquest that would ultimately establish the Targaryens as the ruling family of the Seven Kingdoms.

The story will take fans much further back in Westeros history than the original series and will mark the first time Aegon I has been depicted on-screen. The movie expands on the world created by George R.R. Martin in his A Song of Ice and Fire book series, which served as the source material for Game of Thrones.

The original HBO series, which starred Emilia Clarke, Kit Harington, Sophie Turner and Peter Dinklage, ran for eight seasons from 2011 to 2019. While the show has been off the air for years, the Game of Thrones universe has continued to grow on television.

House of the Dragon, the first major spinoff, takes place roughly 200 years before the events of Game of Thrones and chronicles the Targaryen civil war known as the Dance of the Dragons. The series returned for its third season in June 2026.

Meanwhile, A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, which takes place roughly a century before the original series, recently wrapped its first season on Feb. 22, 2026. Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on HBO in the first half of 2027.

Aegon’s Conquest will go even further back in time, telling the story of the event that laid the foundation for the Targaryen dynasty featured so prominently throughout the franchise.

The idea of bringing Game of Thrones to theaters has been in the works for years. According to previous reporting from THR and Page Six, HBO discussed feature-film possibilities as far back as 2013, when original series creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss pitched ending the show with a trilogy of movies.

The original series ultimately concluded on television in 2019.
