Gisele Bündchen reportedly gave Tom Brady one nonnegotiable before they got married, according to new book, Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness.
The model stressed that she wouldn’t accept an “imbalance of power” between them.
Bündchen and Brady married in 2009 and divorced in 2022.
Gisele Bündchen has always known what she wants—especially when it comes to relationships. In fact, the model reportedly gave Tom Brady one nonnegotiable before they got married.

In a new biography on Tom Brady, titled Brady: An American Story and the Price of Greatness, released on September 29, author Lars Anderson recounts the moment: “In a long, profound conversation with her fiancée, Gisele laid out her vision for a partnership,” Anderson writes, describing Bündchen as “a woman of wild heart and quiet communion, a free spirit.”
“She wanted an interdependent relationship in which the husband and wife were a team,” he wrote. “She stressed the two of them needed to work and rely on each other, but as two whole people with distinct identities. She made it clear she would not accept a codependent relationship built on an imbalance of power, where one partner takes and the other gives.”

Anderson explains that the model “coveted a husband who would inspire and challenge her,” promising to do the same for the NFL star.

However, above all, Bündchen reportedly needed a partner “who would grow with her and simply be with her,” offering support, being a good listener, and showing interest in all aspects of her life. “In every respect, she wanted to be cherished as an equal,” Anderson wrote, adding that “Brady agreed with everything his fiancée said.”
As the tale goes, Bündchen and Brady met on a blind date in December 2006 and were officially dating by January of the following year. In January 2009, Brady popped the question with a solitaire diamond ring, and they tied the knot a month later in an intimate ceremony in California. They celebrated with a second wedding in Bündchen’s native Costa Rica that April.

The couple welcomed two kids: Benjamin Rein in December 2009 and Vivian Lake in December 2012. They divorced in October 2022, though they continue to co-parent.
Bündchen is now happily married to her jujitsu instructor Joaquim Valente, whom she began dating the summer of 2023, welcomed a baby with in February 2025, and secretly wed in December of that year.
