Harry Lennix guests in the March 6 episode of CBS' Boston Blue, marking an on-screen reunion nearly three decades in the making with ER costar Gloria Reuben

Lennix tells PEOPLE he was "excited to have the sense of continuity with the work Gloria and I did on ER several years back"

Boston Blue airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS

Harry Lennix was "over the moon" about his new guest-starring gig on Boston Blue, largely thanks to his on-screen reunion with former ER costar Gloria Reuben.

Lennix, who appeared on TV screens in 1997 as ER's Dr. Greg Fischer (the love interest of Reuben's character Jeanie Boulet), indeed reunites with Reuben in the Friday, March 6 episode of CBS' Boston Blue, "Family Secrets." Fittingly, in the episode, he plays Judge Eli Robinson, a former lover of Reuben's District Attorney Mae Silver.

The Boston Blue reunion comes nearly three decades after the two actors first appeared as love interests, and Lennix tells PEOPLE that it felt like "picking up where we left off."

"It was a wonderful reunion," Lennix, 61, says of their scenes together. "I remember walking into the makeup trailer and seeing her. She was already in the midst of getting made up, something that seemed superfluous given her God-given beauty. But it was like picking up where we left off, work-wise."

He adds of Reuben, "She is a very conscientious actor, and I am always comforted as a guest actor when I know that all of the relevant questions will be raised by the lead cast. It always helps to have context when one is entering the game halfway through the action. It had been the same with her when we worked on ER. No stone goes unturned and that is always a boost to the chemistry on set."

In the years since his time as Fischer on ER (who was the first person the Jeanie Boulet character dated after she was diagnosed as HIV positive), the actor behind the doctor racked up credits in 2004's Ray, 2013's Man of Steel and his decade-long run as Harold Cooper on The Blacklist, among others.

For his latest gig on Boston Blue, Lennix says he was already aware that Reuben was a regular on the series when he got the call. Lennix had history with showrunners Brandon Sonnier and Brandon Margolis via The Blacklist, and says he was "was thrilled they remembered me from the show."

The actor also shared that he could again work alongside Reuben, who plays the matriarch of the Silver law-enforcement family at the center of the show.

"The character I play, Judge Eli Robinson, seems a sort of extension from The Blacklist work I did. That is, moving from law enforcement to the court felt like a progression to me, and I was also excited to have the sense of continuity with the work Gloria and I did on ER several years back," he says via email.

He adds, "Gloria is an incandescent being, and I was over the moon to hear that we would be able to pick up where we left off, in a way. I thoroughly enjoyed working with her before and am entirely loving it now."

The on-screen reunion wasn't the first time the two have reconnected. The two actors recently texted each other when Lennix found out he secured the role, and Reuben also swung by to see him perform on Broadway in Purpose, Lennix says.

The ER alum still has some favorite memories from his time on the medical series after appearing in six episodes alongside Reuben (who originally starred on the show between 1995 and 1999). Specifically, he recalls "an especially cold winter picnic that Gloria and I had to film in a frigid Chicago park."

"It was the middle of winter and my character was without an overcoat! We shivered through it, but made the most of it," Lennix says, adding that he also suggested she should check out a music store in Santa Monica, where he believes she purchased a piano for herself.

"I remember the lead cast all being very kind and welcoming to me: Anthony Edwards, George Clooney, Gloria and all the other folks I had occasion to meet then," he says. "It was a hugely successful show, but you could tell everyone still remembered what it was like to be an actor trying to fit in on a hit show."

As for what fans can expect from his character's journey in Boston Blue (which includes another episode after his Friday debut), Lennix admits he has "no idea what's coming next."

"Then again, that's always the best situation in the world we play in," he says. "It resembles real life in that way."

Boston Blue airs Fridays at 10 p.m. ET on CBS and new episodes are also available to stream on Paramount+ the next day.
