Heat 2’s Massive Budget Caused Multiple Studios to Drop Out of Leonardo DiCaprio Movie

Heat 2‘s budget problems ahead of production caused major studios to back out. Leonardo DiCaprio-starrer had to go back and forth between three powerhouses before it landed with its current studio.
Helmed by Michael Mann, the sequel was first in Warner Bros.’ hands in 2025. The studio had previously served as the distributor and co-producer of the original 1995 film. However, at the time, the studio’s film chiefs, Pam Abdy and Michael De Luca, were under fire for multiple underperforming movies.
Per insider sources, the studio offered Mann around $125 to $150 million for Heat 2. They also offered him creative freedom, but making a hit sequel would cost around $220 million. Since they could not settle on an agreement, the studio allowed Mann to shop the script, which was picked up by a Paramount-Sony collaboration. They pitched $80 million each, bringing the budget up to $160 million. However, the studios got into a disagreement on how the production would run, leading to another delay.
Later, Sony offered to carry out the project alone with a $120 million offer, but this was even lower than the initial price. Eventually, in October 2025, Amazon MGM Studios and United Artists stepped in to negotiate the project. The latter offered a budget of around $165 to $200 million and has greenlit the movie for production, which will take place in November 2026, as per The Wrap.

Who is Leonardo DiCaprio playing in Heat 2, and who else is part of the cast?
Heat 2 will star Leonardo DiCaprio as Chris Shiherlis, one of the lead roles in the crime movie. Val Kilmer previously played this role in the 1995 movie.
The ensemble also includes Christian Bale as Vincent Hanna, Stephen Graham as Neil McCauley, and Adam Driver as Otis Wardell. The former two roles were previously portrayed by Al Pacino and Robert De Niro, respectively.
The second installment is based on the novel with the same name, following the events from 1988 to 2000. The novel is co-written by Mann and Meg Gardiner and was published in 2022. It serves as a prequel and sequel to the first movie, going back and forth in time. Meanwhile, the 1995 film was critically acclaimed, grossing around $187 million during its theatrical run.
