In a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Hilary Duff reflected on her time playing Lizzie McGuire
When discussing the 2003 movie, she revealed the wardrobe felt very different from the show
The 38-year-old actress also recalled “hating” one of the film’s iconic outfits
Hilary Duff became a defining face of early 2000s pop culture thanks to her starring role in the Disney Channel series Lizzie McGuire — but she didn't always align with her character's fashion choices.
In the show, Duff played Lizzie, an awkward but relatable middle schooler navigating friendships, family and growing up, often accompanied by her animated inner thoughts. She later reprised the role in The Lizzie McGuire Movie, where she took on a dual performance as both Lizzie and Isabella Parigi, an Italian pop star who looks exactly like her.
During a recent interview with Vanity Fair, Duff reflected on her time filming and didn’t hold back when it came to one memorable look. “I remember hating this green Isabella outfit so much,” she told the outlet. “It's so funny that it's so iconic.”
For the scene, her character wore a green reflective jacket, paired with a green mini skirt with a sheer sequin fabric overlay. The outfit was finished with fishnet leggings, sparkly boots and a green heart-shaped choker.

Duff explained that stepping into the movie felt like entering a completely different creative world compared to the TV show. The wardrobe, in particular, stood out as a major shift from what she was used to during the series’ run.
“The costumer from the movie made all the outfits, like, original,” she revealed. “It wasn't, like, a designer or anything.”

The bold look was part of Isabella’s flashy pop-star image, designed to stand out on stage and match the high-energy musical sequences. It ultimately became one of the most recognizable visuals from the film, especially during the climactic concert scenes where Lizzie and Isabella sing a duet of "What Dreams Are Made Of."

In the show, which followed Lizzie’s life in suburban California alongside her best friends Miranda (played by Lalaine) and Gordo (played by Adam Lamberg), Duff had much more personal influence over what her character wore. That sense of control made the transition to the film’s styling more noticeable.
“Unlike the TV show where, like, I picked all my clothes, there was a costumer, but it was, like, very influenced by me,” she explained. “Not so much in the movie — and, like, by the way, she crushed it — but being, like, a young teenage girl, I just remember not liking that lime green number at all.”
Still, not everything about Isabella’s look was a miss in Duff’s eyes. Despite her feelings about the outfit, she found one standout element she genuinely enjoyed.
“I loved the brown wig,” she told Vanity Fair.
