Jamie Lee Curtis clarifies her “New Girl” stance: ‘Let’s not waste clicks and comments’

Jamie Lee Curtis is clarifying her feelings about New Girl after saying she doesn’t enjoy filming single-camera TV comedies.

Curtis indicated that her “flip comment” was blown out of proportion.

One of the reasons Curtis enjoyed making New Girl, she said, was acting alongside the late Rob Reiner.

In case it wasn’t clear before, Jamie Lee Curtis thinks New Girl is fantastic.

The veteran actress spoke up on social media Wednesday to explain recent remarks she made about her time on the Fox comedy, which she called a “great show,” and its single-camera format, which she was less enthusiastic about.

“HEY INTERNET! HI!” the Halloween icon wrote alongside a photo of herself, New Girl star Zooey Deschanel, and the late Rob Reiner, who played Curtis’ character’s ex-husband on the show. “As if we don’t have bigger issues facing Americans and the world at large and natural disasters and unnatural behaviors of despots than to be concerned about a flip comment picked up at a press moment promoting NEWLYWEDS @NBC.”

Curtis went on to emphasize that she really did enjoy her time on New Girl, on which she guest-starred as Joan, the mother of Deschanel’s “adorkable” main character, Jess.

But Curtis said she prefers shooting multicamera shows in front of a live studio audience, “which is almost like doing a play where you get immediate feedback.” For single-camera shows like New Girl, “there’s absolutely no feedback, as [if] you’re trying to do comedy in a vacuum, like a comedy feature and I said it wasn’t my favorite experience although the show itself is fantastic.”

Curtis also reiterated that “Zooey Deschanel is an absolute gem of a human” and “I got to play with my friend, Rob Reiner, as exes and that was sweet and lovely and so please, let’s not waste clicks and comments and just move on to WAY more important things. That will be all.”

Curtis’ comments came two days after she brought up New Girl at NBCUniversal’s Summer Backlot Experience, while promoting her upcoming show Newlyweds — which, yes, is a multicam comedy.

Speaking to outlets including Entertainment Weekly, she said, “I did a single-camera, which I hated — I mean, great show, New Girl, very funny — it’s a good show, but doing it is just like doing a movie. You know, you’ve got a camera crew, and nobody laughs. It’s silent, and it’s awful. For me, awful. Single-camera comedies, for me, not fun.”

Presumably Newlyweds will be more to her liking. Curtis is an executive producer on the series and will also be a recurring guest star. The show is billed as a “later-in-life love story about a free-spirited woman and a buttoned-up professor who marry impetuously after a whirlwind courtship.” Téa Leoni and Tim Daly, who previously costarred on Madam Secretary and married in 2025, will play the lead roles.

Newlyweds premieres Oct. 23 at 8:30 p.m. ET/PT on NBC.
