Jutes opens up to PEOPLE about navigating sobriety with wife Demi Lovato
"I've just grown up a lot. I wanna live a long time now that I've married my soulmate," he says
Lovato and Jutes went public with their romance in August 2022
Demi Lovato and Jutes are more than just husband and wife — they're partners in sobriety.
Speaking with PEOPLE ahead of the release of his brand-new single "It Takes Two," Jutes opened up about navigating sobriety as a musician — and how the "Fast" singer inspires him to keep going.
"It's very, very helpful having the support of Demi," Jutes, 34, tells PEOPLE of Lovato, whom he married in May of this year. "Sadly I'm like, I don't know if I would have stuck with it if it wasn't for her, in the beginning. It's obviously the hardest in the beginning and there's still times... it doesn't ever go away. There's still times where I'll be out and I'm like, 'This would be better if I wasn't sober.'"
"It does make me want to go out less now that I'm sober, but my life is just — it's not comparable how much better it is now that I am sober," he continues. "I mean, I love waking up early and feeding my dogs and meditating and having coffee and doing wholesome stuff and feeling good and going to the gym."
In June 2022, Jutes (born Jordan Lutes) revealed that he was 100 days sober on X. That same year, he met Lovato, 33, while working on her eighth studio album Holy Fvck. Now, Lovato — who has been open about her sobriety journey in the past — and Jutes are pillars of strength for one another.
"I've just grown up a lot. I wanna live a long time and now that I've married my soulmate, I want us to live forever," the "Vertigo" singer says. "I don't want to destroy my body. I used to not care about what happened to me when I get older."
"My priorities have definitely changed a lot, which makes it easier to stay on track because I feel like I have so much to live for, as opposed to when I wasn't sober, I didn't really feel like I had anything to live for," he continues.
Jutes is candid about sobriety being "forever a journey" — but he has come a long way and "the support is everything."
"Without that, I don't know if I'm strong enough to do it on my own in the beginning stages," he says.

Jutes and Demi Lovato in Beverly Hills in February 2023
Jutes and Lovato tied the knot in California in May. The couple first went public with their romance in August 2022. "It's a really happy and healthy relationship. He's a super great guy," a source told PEOPLE at the time
"You know, I've waited my whole life for him," the "Cool for the Summer" singer told PEOPLE in September 2024. "It's very grounding to have a partner that is so supportive, so loving, so caring. It's very easy to stay centered with him because I love him so much and he treats me so amazing."
Reflecting on their lives as newlyweds, Jutes says "married life is awesome" because they're "best friends."
"We thought that when we got married that we couldn't love each other any more than we do. And we are somehow so much closer now than even when we got married. It's still growing and still evolving," Jutes tells PEOPLE.
"I would say I'm a big fan of married life... I found my person. I feel very lucky that I've found her."
