Lili Reinhart opened up about the legacy of Riverdale — and its over-the-top plots
Reinhart played Betty Cooper in all seven seasons of the show, from 2017 to 2023
Reinhart also explained how Riverdale led her meeting boyfriend Jack Martin
On Riverdale, Lili Reinhart’s Betty Cooper learns she has a serial killer gene, becomes an FBI agent, travels through time and develops superpowers, but the actress is still very proud of her work on the over-the-top teen drama, which helped her meet boyfriend Jack Martin.
Reinhart, 29, opened up about her time on the show, and Martin, in a Nov. 12 article from Marie Claire. Riverdale, which ran from 2017 to 2023, for seven seasons, was the actress’s breakthrough. And though she’s since appeared in movies like Hustlers and Chemical Hearts and the new TV series Hal & Harper, Reinhart said that Riverdale’s sometimes campy, always wild plots were the best preparation she could ask for.
“I feel like I could do anything because I had this seven-year runway of experience,” Reinhart said.

But she definitely isn’t trying to separate herself from Betty and the rest of the Riverdale gang. “Anyone who bashes the work that got them to where they are is doing themselves a great disservice,” she said. "Call the show crazy. It was. It gave me so much, and I'm so thankful for it. I'm not delusional to the fact that I'm sitting in my house because of Riverdale. I'm not embarrassed of it.”
Reinhart also told Marie Claire that she met Martin, 27, when she saw a video he made making fun of Riverdale and slid into his DMs. They announced their relationship on Instagram in 2023.
“I'm in my lover girl era right now,” Reinhart told the magazine of their relationship. Still, their careers can take them in other directions; he's currently filming Mindy Kaling’s new project Not Suitable For Work in New York.
“It's deeply hard on me to be apart from the person I love," she said about their time apart. "I'm a very domestic woman, and I love to be at home and sit on my couch with my person and my dog; there's nothing that brings me greater joy than that specifically, and when I can't do that, my mental health suffers."
Still, she said, they have strategies. "When I'm working, he visits me; when he's working, I visit him; and if we're both working at the same time, which happened a lot this year, we just have to put our heads down and get through it," she said. "The feeling of missing someone prolonged over eight weeks is exhausting."

Reinhart’s list of upcoming projects remains packed. She stars in the upcoming Forbidden Fruits with Lola Tung and Victoria Pedretti and the romance The Love Hypothesis, a much-antipciated adaptation of the novel by Ali Hazelwood.
"I was lucky enough to shoot three movies back to back," she told PEOPLE earlier this month. She’s in the middle of a built-in break now to talk about Hal & Harper, which streams weekly on Mubi.
"Three movies is a lot," she said. "And I'm not ready to be on a set again."
Still, she told PEOPLE that filming Hal & Harper just weeks after Riverdale ended helped her process moving on from the CW series.
"I really liked going into something new," she said. "My character, Harper, is going through big changes in her life. And then, in my real life, I was going through a huge change in mine. A huge, long, seven-year chapter of my life was ending, and I was really stepping into a new phase of my career and personal life.”
She explained, "It was a big shift in my whole world, and I think it actually allowed me to really tap into a lot of emotions more easily, being able to do it so quickly after Riverdale ended.” Ending Riverdale was “incredibly emotional,” which helped because “Hal & Harper is an incredibly emotional show.”
