Man Rescued After 25-Foot Sailboat Gets Stuck on Shore of California Island

Coast Guard crews airlifted the sailor from uninhabited Santa Rosa Island on Sept. 24

The sailor received first aid at Camarillo Airport and no injuries were reported

A person sailing along the Southern California coast became stuck last week after their boat ran aground on a small island.

The U.S. Coast Guard said in a press release the boater’s sailboat became stranded off the coast of Santa Rosa Island, which is a part of Santa Barbara County, on Thursday, Sept. 24.

Coast Guard officials received a report about a grounded 25-foot sailboat just after 12:15 p.m. that afternoon. A photo shared by the agency shows the sailboat stuck on the beach, just feet from the water.

Military personnel then launched a MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter crew from the Coast Guard’s air station in Ventura County to Santa Rosa Island.

The helicopter crew then brought the sailor, whose identity has not been made public, to the Camarillo Airport, located about 50 miles north of Los Angeles. Emergency medical personnel from the Ventura County Fire Department provided first aid to the boater, and the Coast Guard said that no injuries were reported.

The Coast Guard did not share what caused the sailboat to run aground. The boat was removed from the Santa Rosa Island beach by a towing company and taken to Ventura Harbor.

Santa Rosa Island is California’s second-largest island. Located about 26.5 miles from the nearest mainland, it is a part of the Channel Islands National Park. It is uninhabited, and is known for its hiking, camping and beaches, according to the National Park Service.

This isn’t the first boating incident to take place off the California coast this year.

Kai Sato, 39, set sail from the Catalina Islands on June 7 in an attempt to complete a solo sail across the Pacific Ocean, he told Hawaii News Now. Two weeks into his journey, his mast broke amid strong winds and rough seas, and then he ran out of gas while trying to motor back to shore.

A ship crew finally spotted his sailboat around 900 miles from Hawaii on July 21, the Seafarers International Union said in a statement. Sato said that he was “ecstatic” when the crew found him.

“I was like crying and like so happy, and then they got me fruit and water,” he told Hawaii News Now. “They were so good to me, those guys.”
