In a new interview with PEOPLE, Melissa Peterman revealed the special role she wants to play in her longtime friend Reba McEntire's wedding to Rex Linn

"I just want to go and celebrate. Have fun. Any capacity, any capacity, any and all. I'm ready to serve whatever she needs," Peterman says

Peterman and McEntire starred on Reba together for six seasons from 2001 to 2007, and now costar in NBC's Happy's Place together

Melissa Peterman has her fingers crossed for a special role in Reba McEntire's wedding.

The actresses developed a real-life friendship thanks to their six-season-long working relationship on Reba, with Peterman starring as Barbra Jean, the ex-wife of McEntire's character Reba Hart's ex-husband, Brock Hart. The two are costars once again on NBC's Happy's Place, which is now in its second season.

While chatting with PEOPLE at The Paley Center for Media's Paley Honors Gala in Beverly Hills, California, on Monday, Nov. 10, Peterman shared her hopes for being chosen as McEntire's wedding officiant.

"Well, I have officiated four weddings now," Peterman, 54, tells PEOPLE. "I've done two of my TV sons from Baby Daddy, and my TV husband and my niece. I feel like I’ve got a good track record. They're all still together. So I'm hoping to officiate."

Peterman mostly recently officiated Jean-Luc Bilodeau's wedding to Elise LeBlanc in Indio, California, on Oct. 12. "She’s absolutely hilarious, so we knew the ceremony would be filled with lighthearted, joyful moments," the bride gushed of Peterman to PEOPLE at the time. Also in attendance was Baby Daddy alum Derek Theler, whose wedding Peterman officiated in September 2022.

Peterman has already "floated" the idea to McEntire, 70, and her fiancé, Rex Linn, 68.

"I would sing, which would be very intimidating to sing at her wedding," Peterman says. "But no, actually, I just want to go and celebrate. Have fun. Any capacity, any capacity, any and all. I'm ready to serve whatever she needs."

Linn popped the question to McEntire at their Tennessee ranch on Christmas Eve last year, however, news of the couple's engagement didn't break until Sept. 14 of this year. PEOPLE confirmed that the Happy's Place stars — who first met in the 1990s but didn’t begin dating until 2020 — had gotten engaged after an E! News reporter referred to them as fiancés on the 2025 Emmy Awards red carpet.

Peterman tells PEOPLE she "knew pretty quickly" about the private proposal, and that it was admittedly difficult to keep the secret.

"Yes, especially when it's a joyous secret… one that’s full of joy," she says. "When it’s a dark secret that you don't want to share, that's easy to keep, but when it's just happiness, enjoy it."

The Young Sheldon actress says the thing that she loves most about McEntire's relationship with Linn is "that she is so herself with him."

"I just have never seen her happier, more at ease, more comfortable," Peterman shares. "It's lovely to watch."

During her Oct. 6 appearance on Sherri to promote the second season of her Hallmark series, Finding Mr. Christmas, Peterman shared her stamp of approval on McEntire's engagement.

"I am beyond thrilled for her," she said. "I've known her for 20 some plus years, and watching her with Rex, she's truly herself with him. They're so in love. I mean, they're just perfect together."

New episodes of Happy's Place season 2 air Fridays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
