Copeland’s ballet-inspired look arrives a week after Timothée Chalamet went viral for saying that ballet and opera are outdated art forms that people no longer care about. The actor notably shouted out Copeland as part of his press tour for Marty Supreme, even giving her a coveted windbreaker jacket for the film.
The ballerina responded to Chalamet’s comments during a panel last week with skin care brand Aveeno, and noted that it was “very interesting that [Chalamet] invited me to be a part of promoting Marty Supreme, with respect to my art form.”
“I think that it’s important that we acknowledge that yes, this is an art form that is not [as] popular and a part of pop culture as movies are, but that doesn’t mean that it doesn't have enduring relevance in culture,” she added. “I think that it often is mistaken when something is popular that it’s meaningful or more impactful, and there’s a reason that the opera and the ballet have been around for over 400 years.”
Copeland will dance to the Oscar-nominated song, “I Lied to You,” from Sinners during the telecast. She will appear alongside Raphael Saadiq, Miles Caton, and Buddy Guy for the performance.
