Price: $699.99 each with SL90 shaft and new Rubber Tour Pistol grip

Specs: Milled stainless steel heads with Damascus Steel insert and 20-gram counterbalanced shaft.

Available: July 7

Who it’s for: Golfers who want a premium milled putter with a distinctive feel and either a face-balanced mallet or a zero-torque design

What you should know: The Damascus Milled Jailbird Mini Double Bend and the Damascus Milled Seven S2S join the previously-released Damascus-insert putters that Odyssey released earlier this season, aimed at deep-pocketed golfers who want elite levels of feel and precision.

The Deep Dive: Damascus steel has been associated with premium knives, swords and other metalwork for centuries because of its distinctive wavy patterning and layered construction. The process of forging, folding, and pressing metals together again and again takes time and skill, but the results can be stunning.

Odyssey is using the material on top of an insert that was designed using artificial intelligence to blend Tour-level feel with enhanced distance control.

Like the inserts in the Damascus Milled putters that were released in April and June, no two should look exactly alike, which gives the Damascus Milled line some of the same appeal as a hand-finished watch dial, a custom guitar top or a chef’s knife you would rather admire than actually use to chop onions.

The heads are milled from stainless steel, which should appeal to players who like the crisp lines, defined edges. Theo blasted silver finish gives them a clean, understated look that lets the Damascus insert and sole plate do the talking without turning the whole thing into a Las Vegas billboard.

The Jailbird Mini Double Bend is the more traditional of the two new offerings. The Jailbird shape has become one of Odyssey’s most recognizable mallets, and this version features a double-bend shaft that makes it face-balanced with three-quarter shaft offset. That setup generally suits golfers with minimal face rotation in their stroke who want the putter to feel stable and quiet through impact.

The Seven S2S is the more modern option. The familiar Seven shape is built here in a Square 2 Square, zero-torque configuration. In practical terms, that means it is designed to help golfers reduce face rotation during the stroke. For players who feel as if the putter face wants to twist open or closed, or who have become curious about the zero-torque movement that has been gaining attention, this is the Damascus Milled model that will likely draw their eyes first.

Both putters come with Odyssey’s SL90 shaft, a lightweight steel shaft with 20 grams of counterbalance weight in the butt end to promote stability, enhanced tempo and more control. They also come with a new Rubber Tour Pistol grip developed with Golf Pride and shaped with feedback from tour players.

At $699.99, the Damascus Milled Jailbird Mini DB and Seven S2S are not casual purchases. Then again, limited-edition milled putters made with Damascus steel inserts are not supposed to be casual. They are for golfers who want performance, craftsmanship and something a little different sitting behind the ball.
