Paige Bueckers may soon be forced to pay a small fine to the WNBA after butting heads with Caitlin Clark during a heated foul exchange.

With fewer than 10 seconds left in the first half of the Wings’ 91-85 victory over the Fever on Thursday, Bueckers grabbed Clark's arm with a foul to give. However, officials failed to blow the whistle, even as the Indiana star guard appeared to exaggerate the contact with a dramatic recoil.

Bueckers attempted to wrap Clark up a second time, finally prompting a foul call from the referees. Clark was visibly displeased, immediately shoving Bueckers away before angrily hurling the ball to teammate Makayla Timpson.

Once the whistle sounded, Clark was seen shouting, "Get off, quit grabbing," according to Professional LipReader Nicola Hickling. After whipping the ball past Bueckers' head, she turned to the referee and allegedly cried out, "She grabbed my wrist!"

Bueckers appeared puzzled by Clark's heated reaction, as the 24-year-old extended her hand and seemingly urged her opponent to "calm down."

Though tensions nearly boiled over during the encounter, it was another incident later in the contest that will likely result in a fine for Bueckers.

In the third quarter, Bueckers was once again issued a common foul on Clark. This time around, the UConn product did little to hide her frustration with the official, promptly voicing her disagreement with the call before being assessed a technical.

Fortunately for Bueckers, Thursday’s technical foul marked only her second of the 2026 season. According to the WNBA rulebook, players will receive a $500 fine for each of their first three technicals, with the penalty rising to $1,000 for techs 4-7.

Once a player surpasses eight technicals, they will be hit with a $1,500 fine for each, with an additional one-game suspension for every even-numbered tech.

Despite the on-court tension, there appears to be no lasting animosity between Bueckers and Clark, with the latter generously praising the reigning WNBA Rookie of the Year when speaking to reporters after Thursday's game.

"Obviously, she's an incredible player. [She] makes it really hard on us defensively... Paige is a tremendous player," Clark said. "She takes what the defense gives her; she doesn't force anything; she's smooth; she finds the open teammate. So she's just a really tough guard."

This is far from the first time the Clark-Bueckers rivalry has commanded the spotlight, even as both athletes consistently maintain they share a cordial relationship.

During a January appearance on the 'Not Gonna Lie' podcast, Bueckers dismissed the notion of any feud with Clark, attributing it to media fabrication. "Me and Caitlin even played together on the Junior Olympic level when we were younger, we were in high school and it was always a fun time," she recalled.

"It's crazy because everyone's pitting me and Caitlin against each other for the longest time. And we're cool, we're friends.

"But again, it's respect to the competition, so we understand that. We understand how [the] media works and how they want to pit two people against each other, and they're supposed to hate each other, and blah blah blah. So we all understand that, and it's all in the love of the game."
