White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt's decision to leave her post has been months in the making, according to a new report, as sources say she was suffering extreme “burnout” and wasn't getting any sleep while balancing motherhood in her highly demanding role.

One source told the Daily Mail that Leavitt - who accidentally humiliated Trump as critics asked about his 'diaper' - had been considering quitting during her maternity leave, as Trump contacted her repeatedly to ask when she would return to work. The person added that it was “no doubt one of the hardest decisions of her life so far.”

According to another insider, the 29-year-old was also suffering from extreme “burnout” after returning to work. They added, “It was a very stressful job to do with her children. She never got any sleep, and she didn't want her performance to slip either, so she decided to stay as long as she could and do the job well. The president did everything he could to keep her.” It comes after an "unflattering" photo of Leavitt was suddenly removed from the internet.

The source described Leavitt's job as “thankless” while saying that whoever replaced her would have “big shoes to fill.” Another added, “I do know that the replacement isn't chosen just yet. They are still weighing their options.”

The sources said that after Leavitt returned from having her baby, she “wasn’t feeling it anymore” and “was just trying to figure out how to politely step down with his [Trump's] blessing.”

One of the insiders explained, “Trump really didn't want her to leave as he actually trusts her and doesn't like having to deal with new people in his circle when he wants to focus on getting stuff done in his time left in office.”

Trump has yet to reveal who might succeed her in the prominent position. In his own social media statement, he acknowledged her decision as one "I totally understand and respect!" while suggesting she'll remain within his inner circle.

"Karoline will now be one of my top outside advisors, and an influential voice within the Republican Party, as we work to defy History and conclusively win the Midterm Elections," the president wrote.

The 28-year-old, who was hit with plastic surgery rumors as a shocking throwback photo from 2018 resurfaced online, is the youngest person to ever hold the role and only just returned to work last month, weeks after giving birth to her second child. She described her choice as a "bittersweet decision" in a Wednesday social media statement, posted shortly after President Donald Trump confirmed her departure.

Leavitt wrote in a statement, "The truth is since returning to the White House after the birth of my daughter, I have felt in my heart that I cannot be the best mom my two young children deserve while devoting the constant time, energy, and attention required of the White House Press Secretary — and that is why I have ultimately made the bittersweet decision to depart the White House and embark on a new chapter in my life."

Leavitt previously served as a spokesperson for MAGA Inc., a super PAC backing Trump, before joining his 2024 campaign team. In 2022, she launched a congressional bid in New Hampshire, emerging victorious in a crowded 10-way Republican primary but ultimately falling short in the general election against sitting Democratic Rep. Chris Pappas.
