Princess Diana Had a Celebrity Crush on This A-List Actor—and Prince William Told Him About It

Princess Diana’s celebrity crush was Kevin Costner.

Prince William revealed the sweet tidbit to the actor a few years back.

Diana and Costner connected before her death in 1997 to talk about her starring in the sequel to The Bodyguard.

Princess Diana may have been one of the most famous women in the world, but even she had celebrity crushes. The star who caught her eye was none other than Kevin Costner, according to her son Prince William.

William revealed the news to Costner a few years back, with the actor recounting the story during a 2024 interview with People. “I happened to be in England, and I got this message that the prince would love to talk,” he told the outlet. “And I said, ‘What?’... and then I went, ‘Okay.’”

Costner went on to share that he and William met in a room, just the two of them, where the royal dropped the sweet tidbit. “He walked up, and we shook hands ... The first line out of his mouth was, ‘You know, my mom kind of fancied you.’”

And as it turns out, Diana and Costner’s connection wasn’t entirely from afar. They met through Sarah Ferguson, who was previously married to King Charles’s brother now ex-Prince Andrew, and their conversation would lead to discussions about Diana potentially starring opposite Costner in a sequel to The Bodyguard.

“There was a moment that that was really flying down the tracks, very quietly, because it’s how I operate,” Costner said of the secret project to People. He added, “It was so sweet. Sarah was the one that set this up. Sarah was very cool...when she could have been going, ‘Well, I’m a princess too. What about me?’ She didn’t do that at all. Diana and I began to talk.”

Costner opened up further about the project and his conversations with Diana to Howard Stern in 2024, sharing that The Bodyguard 2 would mirror elements of the princess’s life, with a royal being stalked by paparazzi. “I said, ‘Look, I’m going to do The Bodyguard 2 and I think I can build this around you,’” he recalled.

According to Costner, Diana was immediately on board, admitting that her “life was about to change” as she was gearing up to finalize her divorce from Charles.

“I didn’t really go into depth with it, but I thought I understood what she was saying,” Costner continued. “She was very sweet.”

Coster revealed Diana was ready to dive in and even asked about an onscreen kiss. “She said, ‘Is there going to be a kissing scene?’ And I said, ‘Do you want there to be one?’ And she said, ‘Yeah.’ And I said, ‘Then we’ll do that.’”

The sequel ultimately never happened. After Diana tragically died in a car crash in Paris in 1997, Costner didn’t feel right proceeding without her.

“I never made that movie because I could not replace Princess Di,” he said to Stern.
