Princess Diana's heartbreaking admission as she thought her marriage 'could have worked'

Princess Diana married then-Prince Charles in 1981, but the couple divorced 15 years later.
Now, royal expert and editor Ingrid Seward has shared insights about her friend, Princess Diana. Seward insisted Charles "did love her," despite their turbulent relationship.
She continued, "He may not have loved her in the very beginning, and he may not have loved her by the end, but he felt so bad that he couldn't make the marriage work." It comes as Diana's brother has revealed the moment she knew her marriage was over.

Seward explained how Charles "was plagued by guilt because he knew he was the one who should have made it work. But her intense jealousy and many, many other things...they were just not suited at the time."
During Hello! magazine's live broadcast of A Right Royal Podcast, the royal expert revealed one factor Princess Diana believed could have saved their relationship.

She shared, "Diana also said to me she thought if they'd met when they were older, they probably would have made it work and conquered the world; that's what she loved to say."
Seward continued, "She actually told me that she really loved Charles. He was the one she would always love."

In the documentary The Royal Family at War, Seward recalled, "Diana did tell me something quite interesting. She said that on the day of the divorce, she and Charles sat down together on the sofa, and they both cried."
Royal commentator Richard Fitzwilliams also observed, "It seems once Charles and Diana accepted that their marriage was over, they both did have a natural feeling of sadness.
"But there was also a lot of mutual exhaustion after fighting their relationship battle in public for so many years that might have just caused this emotional moment."
Now-King Charles married now-Queen Camilla in 2005 in a private ceremony attended by just 28 guests, among them Prince Harry and Prince William.
The pair had first crossed paths decades before tying the knot. Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip were absent from the ceremony itself, though they did host a reception in the couple's honor.
Today, the royal couple have been together in marriage for more than two decades.
