Jenna Bush Hager knows how to pick a good book. The Read With Jenna founder and Today Show co-host officially launched her book club in March 2019 as part of the NBC morning chat show. Each month, Bush Hager announces her book club pick on The Today Show and discusses it throughout the month with readers, reviewers, and authors. Thursday, the charming talk show host took to social media to share that one of her book club picks from this year is a finalist for the Barnes & Noble 2025 Book of the Year.

“Congratulations to our September pick, Buckeye, for being one of 14 finalists for the Barnes & Noble 2025 Book of the Year,” the Read With Jenna book club shared on social media on Thursday.

Bush Hager calls Patrick Ryan’s novel “a moving story about family, secrets, and the ties that bind us to where we came from.”

Read With Jenna’s many fans and followers shared their sentiments on the New York Timesbestseller.

“It’s my absolute favorite book of the year,” shared one reader.

Another added, “This will be my favorite book of the year…such an outstanding read!”

“Such a good book,” wrote another, while another reader shared, “I loved this book.”

Published in September 2025 and debuting at No. 4 on the New York Times Bestseller List, Buckeye by Patrick Ryanis an epic novel that begins at the end of World War II and closes at the end of the 20th century. The story of two fictional couples in Ohio whose lives intertwine switches between the stories of four different characters and tackles themes of secrets, societal pressure, and the consequences of one impulsive act.

Patrick Ryan is also the author of Saints of Augustine, In Mike We Trust, and Gemini Bites.

Buckeye joins a list of of the year’s best books, including Broken Country by Clare Leslie Hall, which Reese Witherspoon—whose Reese’s Book Club chose the novel for its March 2025 pick—called her favorite book of 2025.

Joining Buckeye and Broken Country on Barnes & Noble’s Best Fiction Book of the Year list are Mona’s Eyes by Thomas Schlesser, Maggie; or a Man and a Woman Walk Into a Bar by Katie Yee, The Land of Sweet Forever: Stories and Essays by Harper Lee, The Emperor of Gladness by Ocean Vuong, Atmosphere: A Love Story by Taylor Jenkins Reid, My Friends: A Novel by Fredrik Backman, Circle of Days by Ken Follett, What We Know: A Novel by Ian McEwan, Shadow Ticket by Thomas Pynchon, We Do Not Part: A Novel by Han Kang, The Artist and the Feast by Lucy Steeds, and The Loneliness of Sonia and Sunny: A Novel by Kiran Desai, among others.

Barnes & Noble usually announces its pick for Best Book of the Year in mid-November.
