Reba McEntire will host this year's Christmas in Rockefeller Center on NBC, PEOPLE can exclusively reveal

The Happy's Place and The Voice star says she's "really excited" and plans to "bundle up"

The annual special will air on Dec. 3 on NBC and Peacock

This year, Reba McEntire is kicking off the holiday season in a big way.

On Thursday, Oct. 23, PEOPLE can exclusively announce that for the time ever, the singer and actress will host Christmas in Rockefeller Center on NBC.

"I'm really excited to get to go to New York City in December. I've never been there in December," McEntire, 70, tells PEOPLE.

She adds, "To see all the Christmas decorations and to get to be a part of the tree lighting ceremony, Rockefeller Center, it's something that I've always wanted to do and I'm honored that they asked me to do it."

The annual special celebrates the holiday season with the lighting of the famous tree in the heart of N.Y.C.. It will air live on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and simulcast on Peacock.

In addition to hosting duties, the Happy's Place actress will perform throughout the evening. More stars are set to perform during the special, but those will be announced at a later date.

Preparing for the N.Y.C. weather, McEntire says she plans to "bundle up."

"I'm going to triple, quadruple layer. I'll probably have my heated vest on, and all the clothes I can, insulated underwear," she says.

"I think I'm happier now than I've ever been in my life," McEntire says. "It’s amazing. It’s wonderful being 70 and getting to do what I get to do at the level I want to do it."

She's currently busier than ever too, starring on two hit NBC shows: The Voice and Happy's Place.

"Anytime I get to step on that set, I feel like home. It’s my happy place," she says of the sitcom, in which she stars alongside Melissa Peterman, Belissa Escobedo and fiancé Rex Linn. The show returns Nov. 7.

As for whether she sees herself retiring one day, she tells PEOPLE that she isn't slowing down — at least for the time being.

"I don’t know when. It could be in 20 years," McEntire says of the possibility of retiring. "I think I’ll know when it’s the time. Dolly [Parton] and I talked about that an awful lot when she did the Reba show, and I said, 'Are you going to retire?' She said, 'Why would I? What in the world could I do and have as much fun as what I’m doing in this job right now?' I agree with her a hundred percent. Slow down, maybe, but no plans of retiring."

"I love this chapter in my life. I'm very grateful," she concludes.

Christmas in Rockefeller Center will air live on Wednesday, Dec. 3 at 8 p.m. ET on NBC and simulcast on Peacock. Happy’s Place season 2 premieres Friday, Nov. 7, on NBC and will stream the next day on Peacock. The Voice airs Mondays and Tuesdays at 8 p.m. ET on NBC.
