Down the rabbit hole and into Wonderland goes Sabrina Carpenter.
The two-time Grammy winner and "Espresso" singer is set to star in and produce an untitled musical film inspired by Lewis Carroll’s *Alice in Wonderland* for Universal Pictures, ** confirms. Lorene Scafaria (*Succession*, *Hustlers*) will write and direct the project.
Plot details are being kept under wraps for now, but in addition to Carpenter, Marc Platt (*Dear Evan Hansen*, *La La Land*) will produce through Universal-based Marc Platt Productions. Leslie Morgenstein and Elysa Koplovitz Dutton will produce through Alloy Entertainment.
First published in 1865, Carroll’s classic children's novel follows a girl named Alice who falls down a rabbit hole and lands in a fantasy world of talking creatures. The story has inspired numerous film and television adaptations over the years, including Disney's 1951 animated classic, and more recently Tim Burton's live-action 2010 film, starring Mia Wasikowska, Johnny Depp, Anne Hathaway, and Helena Bonham Carter, and its 2016 sequel directed by James Bobin.**

The project marks Carpenter's first major studio role. As an actor, she's perhaps best known for playing Maya Hart on *Boy Meets World* spinoff series, *Girl Meets World*. Other credits include Prime Video’s *Emergency,* indie drama *The Short History of the Long Road, Tall Girl* at Netflix, and 20th Century Fox’s *The Hate U Give* alongside Amandla Stenberg. She's also set to guest star in a one-off *Muppet* *Show* event special that will air next year in honor of the original show’s 50th anniversary.

Fans have been trying to wishcast Carpenter in a different movie musical — a potential third *Mamma Mia* film — for some time. To add flames to the fire, franchise producer Judy Craymer told Deadline in May that she could see the pop star joining the franchise.
“She’d be a goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep," Craymer, 67, told the outlet, adding, "It’ll happen when it happens."

In the meantime, Carpenter is busy with her *Short n’ Sweet *tour, which is set to conclude Nov. 23 in Los Angeles. She was also just nominated for six Grammys for her latest album, *Man's Best Friend*, including Album of the Year, and Song of the Year, Record of the Year, and Best Music Video for “Manchild.”
