Sofía Vergara is opening up to PEOPLE about her new Skechers campaign
She says she fell in love with the brand after undergoing two knee surgeries and needing comfortable shoes
She also reveals her next career goals, including wanting to be in "blockbuster" movies like the Dune franchise
Sofía Vergara's new campaign with Skechers was one born out of necessity.
In 2024, the actress, 53, underwent her first knee surgery, and so her search for comfortable shoes began.
"I was going to have to be in tennis shoes for a long time and needed something that I could wear with my dresses and with my jeans," Vergara tells PEOPLE on set of the campaign. "There's something about the memory foam inside the Skechers that is spectacular, and it's really good if you have to stay all day long in your tennis shoes."
Vergara underwent a second knee surgery in July, and as she continues to recover, she has to wear her tennis shoes even while at home.
"I cannot be barefoot while I'm healing," she says. "So, the Skechers slip-ons are like heaven. I can take them on and off to get on the bed, on the couch. It's great."

Vergara's partnership with Skechers follows her friend and fellow America's Got Talent judge Howie Mandel's involvement with the brand.
"He was first, and that was very exciting because I love Howie," she says. "We've been together working for six years already, and he's the best. He told me how nice it was to work with them, what a great partnership he had, so I got really excited."
While filming the most recent season 20 of AGT, Vergara would pair her Skechers with her glamorous outfits for the live shows.
"I knew I couldn't do the show in high heels because I had to walk down the aisle of the theater dancing," she says. "I didn't want to risk it because of my last operation, so I kind of paired every outfit with a pair of Skechers. When you're wearing elegant outfits, it feels odd, but it's actually super comfortable."

Prioritizing comfort is a new thing for Vergara.
"I've never even thought about comfort, actually," she says. "I just want to wear things that make me feel good and sexy. If I'm going out, I don't care if I'm uncomfortable."
Right now, Vergara says she's into pairing "baggy jeans" with "sexier tops" like corsets.
"Then, you don't look too much," she says. "I like the mix, and corsets are great. I need a lot of structure."
Reflecting on her style evolution, Vergara says she used to "be only in a bathing suit" growing up in Colombia. It was the same when she lived in Miami in the '90s.
"I have so many pictures of me in a bathing suit," she says. "People keep sending me pictures. It's super funny. I don't do that anymore, obviously, only when I'm on vacation. And, of course, now, I'm 53, before I was 22, 23, so things have changed a lot."
Vergara admits she felt "more confident body-wise" in her 20s.
"Now, I'm like, 'There's things coming down here, things here,'" she says. "I don't think you can compare being 53 to 25, 23."

It's been 16 years since Modern Family first premiered and made Vergara a star, but she still "can't believe" that much time has passed.
After the series finale aired in 2020, the cast "kind of got separated because we finished, and two weeks later, they closed everything for COVID," Vergara recalls. "We got disconnected really fast."
Vergara says that, eventually, costar Eric Stonestreet is "going to do a big party" for the cast to celebrate his recent marriage to Lindsay Schweitzer, whom he married in Kansas City in September.
"I'm super excited [for him]," she says.
After 11 years of Modern Family and a turn playing drug lord Griselda Blanco in Netflix's Griselda, two "completely different" roles, Vergara is confident "now I could do whatever I want to do" from here.
"I'm seeing what is out there for me," she says. "I think I want to do movies, maybe a big movie like Dune or one of those really big blockbusters would be really fun. I've never done anything like that."
