Spider-Man: Brand New Day becomes highest-grossing film in US box office history

Spider-Man: Brand New Day has overtaken Star Wars: The Force Awakens to become the highest-grossing film in North American box office history, ending a record that had stood for more than a decade.
The superhero film hit $936.773m in ticket sales in the US and Canada after 47 days in cinemas, edging past the $936.66m earned by The Force Awakens after its release in 2015.
Brand New Day reached the record on Tuesday, when it added $915,084 to its running total, according to box office data.
Directed by Destin Daniel Cretton, Brand New Day sees Tom Holland return as Peter Parker, with Zendaya, Sadie Sink, Jacob Batalon, and Jon Bernthal also starring.
Set four years after the events of Spider-Man: No Way Home, the film follows Peter as he lives alone in a world that no longer remembers him and devotes himself entirely to fighting crime as Spider-Man. But the strain of that isolated life triggers a mysterious physical transformation just as a powerful new threat emerges in New York.
Brand New Day opened in North American theatres on 31 July with $360.09m, itself a record for the biggest domestic opening weekend in history. It surpassed Avengers: Endgame, which opened with about $357m in 2019.

The new record is only the latest in a remarkable run for the fourth solo Spider-Man film starring Holland; Brand New Day became the fastest film ever to cross every major domestic milestone from $400m through to $900m, reaching $700m in 13 days, $800m in 19 days, and $900m in 36 days, according to Variety. In doing so, it became only the second film ever to pass $900m domestically, joining The Force Awakens.

The film's success has also helped make 2026 a record-breaking year for cinemas, contributing to the biggest summer at the global box office, which generated $4.765bn between May and the first week of September, according to The Guardian.
Brand New Day crossed $2bn worldwide in 17 days, reaching about $2.022bn after three weekends. It became only the eighth film to pass the $2bn mark and the second-fastest to do so, behind Avengers: Endgame, which reached the milestone in 11 days.
It was also the first film in the Spider-Man franchise to cross $2bn worldwide, surpassing Spider-Man: No Way Home, which finished its original run with about $1.92bn.

Worldwide, Brand New Day has taken about $2.45bn, putting it third on the all-time global chart behind James Cameron’s Avatar, which collected about $2.9bn, and Avengers: Endgame, which took $2.7bn. It saw a $932m opening weekend, making it the second-biggest worldwide launch in cinema history behind Endgame’s $1.22bn.
Brand New Day also passed $1bn globally in six days, making it the second-fastest film to reach that mark.
After spending six consecutive weekends at No 1 at the North American box office,Brand New Day slipped to second place in its seventh weekend, when Nicole Kidman and Sandra Bullock-starrer Practical Magic 2 opened at No 1 with $30m.
Alongside The Odyssey, Christopher Nolan’s epic in which Holland also stars, Brand New Day has helped take the actor’s cumulative worldwide box office to a reported $15.5bn. That puts him ahead of Zoe Saldaña, whose films have generated more than $15.4bn, making Holland the highest-grossing actor by cumulative film box office.
The film has seen rave reviews from critics, including The Independent’s Clarisse Loughrey, who called it “the best Spider-Man movie in more than 20 years.”
