- Episode 12 of *Survivor 50* featured two brutal eliminations as Rick Devens and Cirie Fields made their way to the jury.

- Aubry Bracco appears to be getting a pretty big winner's edit. Should we believe our eyes?

- In a remarkable display of restraint, I spend only one single sentence on a hammock collapsing.

You know something momentous is going down when a Rick Devens ouster registers as only a mere footnote in a *Survivor* episode. Nobody brought more fireworks and fun to *Survivor 50* than my main man Uncle Rick, and yet even the resident chaos agent would acknowledge that he was but an opening act to the headliner for the anniversary season's penultimate episode.

According to the legend herself, we have seen the last of Cirie Fields competing on *Survivor*. Here's what she told me last summer after she got back from Fiji: "Oh, Dalton, I'm tired. I'll go and do a guest spot if they want me to come and teach some of these young'uns how to play. [*Laughs*] Or maybe be a supportive coach or something. I don't know if Jeff [Probst] needs a nurse on set, maybe. But outside of that, I'm like, ugh. I don't know. I never say never though. And somebody told me, never say never. So I never say never. But I feel like 50 was my swan song."

If that's the case, her last outing was another masterclass.

A lot of people asked me whom I wanted to win *Survivor 50*. That's a complicated question for me to answer, because I have a varying degree of relationships with all of these cast members, so I geared my response to answer a slightly different question: What would be the best *story* in terms of a winner for this anniversary season? And two names immediately came to mind: Jenna (because having the season 1 representative come back and win season 50 would serve as perfect bookends for the series) and Cirie (because she was the franchise's most popular player ever).

Even though Cirie once again fell frustratingly short of reaching the mountaintop, there is an argument to be made that she saved her best game for her final game. Have you ever seen so many contestants — and not just clueless newbies, mind you, but savvy, experienced all-stars — completely in the dark as to a player's true alliances and connections in the game? Pretty much every single person on that beach came to Cirie pitching to get rid of Ozzy and/or Rizo, having *no idea whatsoever* that she was so tightly aligned with both of them.

She kept flipping the script and influencing votes without people realizing she was doing it. And other times, she needed to be more direct. Remember when she came back from that coconut challenge and had to school Ozzy on why they needed to take out Coach and Chrissy instead of Aubry and Rick? Nobody had any idea whom Cirie was working with, and yet everybody wanted to work *with* her. At least to a point.

That was always going to be Cirie's Achilles' heel on this season. Nobody was ever going to bring her to the end, because if you bring her to the end, you lose. And since Cirie is not exactly what anyone would describe as a challenge beast, she was always going to have to rely on someone bringing her there. It made for a nearly impossible mission. The fact that she, as the most socially and strategically dangerous player in the game, made it this far is remarkable in itself.

The most shocking thing about Cirie's exit is that it happened in this episode at all. Back on Cirie's first season (*Survivor: Panama — Exile Island*) she lost at fire in what should have been the penultimate episode. But because Cirie was so popular, and they wanted all her fans to tune in to the finale, they instead ended on a cliffhanger so she could lose at fire in the first few minutes the following week instead. I'm surprised they didn't push this second Tribal Council to next week for the same reason (yet happy they didn't).

But mourn not Cirie's loss in the game. Celebrate that we got to watch this much of her — and in peak form, no less. Peak form also describes the past few weeks of *Survivor 50*, which goes into the finale on quite the heater. Let's bounce through all the big moments that went down on episode 12.

Winner edit?

The fallout from the double elimination was multi-pronged. We saw the yin and yang of Rick Devens — yucking it up ebulliently and telling us how "I want to stick in this game and continue to cause some trouble" one minute, and then crying in the hammock about his impending doom in the game the next. (Who had Rick shedding more tears than Rizo on their *Survivor 50* bingo card?)

Meanwhile, Rizo explained to Cirie why he had to turn on fellow alliance mate Ozzy after the jungle boy (man) blabbed about everything. Cirie's assessment was harsh.

"I thought you had two brain cells to rub together or I wouldn't have been working together," she explained of Ozzy in a confessional. "I would not have tied my car to an idiot."

*I meeeeeeeeaaaan*… you had played with him twice before. It's not like you didn't know what you were getting yourself into on that one. Gotta call balls and strikes there.

And then we had Jonathan taking credit for the Ozzy blindside. While he certainly was instrumental in making it happen due to A) Previously pushing for his ouster, and B) Being the person to go back and forth between the two groups last week, we also saw a lot of edit credit go to Aubry for taking the ammunition Ozzy gave her and using it to orchestrate his demise.

I don't get super into trying to decipher "winner edits" like some of you out there. Maybe it's because I've seen those predictions be wildly incorrect before. Or perhaps it's due to the fact that I simply don't *want* to be spoiled so try to ignore it as best I can. But I have to say, this edit sure does make it feel like an Aubry Bracco victory could be loading.

I know Stephen Fishbach has been harping on this for a while, and I think he's on to something. After all, we've heard Aubry talk multiple times throughout the season — hell, multiple times in *this one episode!* — about the pain of losing to Michele on *Kaoh Rong* and learning from that experience and making sure she does not sit next to the wrong people at the end again.

Why would producers keep making those *Kaoh Rong* finale reference deposits if they were not going to pay dividends later? Editorially, that *has* to pay off, either in a glorious final Tribal Council win or another crushing loss. But Aubry not even getting to FTC would now not make any editorial sense considering all the groundwork that has been laid. I have her locked and loaded in the final three due to all the attention that has been paid to her previous loss there. Then again, the editors *did* fool me this week with a similar bait and switch.

Stacking up wins

When I heard Devens talk before the challenge about how much he needed to win it to save himself, and how he won four immunity contests in his previous season, I didn't necessarily think he was going to emerge with an audaciously large piece of jewelry around his neck, but I did think he would at least be in the running for it. Boy, was I wrong.

Instead, we essentially were treated to a montage of Uncle Rick looking to the sky (no stars out yet!) in exasperation as his stack of blocks repeatedly fell to the ground. The dude was not even remotely close to anyone at any point in this contest. Wait… just wait a minute… I think I may have cracked the code on something. Rick has been crying a lot this season. And this four-time immunity winner has not even come close to sniffing the necklace this season and was especially terrible in this competition. Even worse than… OH MY GOD, RICK AND RIZO HAVE TOTALLY SWITCHED BODIES!!!!

It's like *Freaky Friday, 18 Again, Vice Versa,* and the best (which is to say, the worst) body swapping movie of all time, *Like Father, Like Son*, all rolled into one. Up is down! Black is white! You must unlearn all that you have learned! Rick is Rizo. Rizo is Rick. Don't believe me? WHY DO YOU THINK RICK DID NOT HAVE A TIE ON AS A MEMBER OF THE JURY? Because it is not Rick at all! It's the R-I-Z-G-O-D RizGod, baby!

Rick Devens on 'Survivor 50'

It seems expert idol hunter Rick Devens stumbled across an advantage after all. And not just *any* advantage, but the Lindsay Lohan *Freakier Friday* Now Streaming on Disney+ Swapalooza advantage, enabling Rick to body swap with any player of his choosing. The best part of the advantage — other than Lindsay Lohan refraining from rolling her eyes and using air quotes while describing it to Amy Poehler — is that Rick was not forced to announce it to the rest of the tribe like his island BFF Christian.

In the end, slow and steady won the first immunity challenge race, as Joe took the necklace in a performance so riveting that Jeff Probst noted, "Joe is moving just enough to technically be moving. You are not watching slow motion." Also, am I the only one who noticed that Cirie picked up the wrong letter and was on the verge of spelling *immunity* wrong had her stack not fallen? I cannot express to you how much I wanted Joe to drop in that moment and for Cirie to *not* drop in that moment just so that misspelling would have had actual hilarious consequences. On the bright side, I did get to see two people fall on their butts later courtesy of a violent hammock drop, so we'll call it even.

Breaking news alert!

Seeing as how he did not have an idol or a dope-ass necklace, Devens appeared to be toast, but Tiffany had other ideas. She was sick of Rizo skating by with his idol, so she wanted to use the RickGod as a smoke screen to take out the RizGod. But not everyone was down with that plan. Obviously, Cirie was gonna squash that s---, but there was someone else who wanted to protect Rizo as well.

Aubry felt like Rizo was annoying people, and that her castmates may not want to give $2 million to a kid who annoyed them. Driving home her *Kaoh Rong* theme even more, Aubry explained that "Tonight's vote for me is all about the endgame. It's all about who I see in my final three."

That clearly wasn't Devens, who got a classic hero’' exit complete with fond pre-death recollections ("I left my stamp on this game.") and appreciation ("The stars out here are amazing"). That made everyone teary, and even though he always felt lucky, Rick's luck ran out with the Shot in the Dark, and he was unanimously sent to the jury.

'Still feel lucky," he told the crowd. "I'm excited to vote for one of you all to win $2 million."

And we were lucky to have him on our TV screens. Devens is exactly the type of contestant you want playing this game. He goes all out. He takes bold risks. He's a showman. And he's just a great dude. Seriously, as a human being, it's impossible not to like the guy. I guarantee you that if you met and spent any time with him, you would feel the same way. Super genuine and down to earth. I'm so glad he was able to experience the thrill of being on *Survivor 50*, and we got to experience all the thrills he gave us along the way.

Cirie’s last stand

After Unc made his way to the jury, Tiffany remained focused on taking out Rizo and his idol. Unfortunately for her, everyone else outside of Cirie seemed desperate to take Tiffany out instead, including Aubry.

"I'm super anxious I'm looking at Michele part two," Aubry told us, driving home the *Kaoh Rong* redemption arc with all the subtlety of an Applebee's product placement spot listing off *every single* *Applebee’s menu item that ever existed.*

The plan to take out Tiffany took hold, which led to a super weird scene at the immunity challenge where Aubry, Rizo, Joe, and Jonathan all worked together on the arch puzzle to keep immunity out of the hands of their target, with Aubry at one point completely abandoning her own word puzzle to help Joe spell *inconceivable*. Only one problem: They didn't realize the puzzle was double-sided, allowing Tiffany to come back and win the necklace. The rest of the group seemed as upset about that as I was that nobody at all even attempted to bust out a *Princess Bride* impersonation on a challenge centered around the word *inconceivable.* (Time to send the Six-Fingered Man after them!)

As soon as the edit cut to a shot of Cirie after Tiffany's win, my heart sank. I knew what that meant.

Sure enough, back at camp, Aubry verbalized what everyone had to be thinking: "It's time for Cirie to go. If Cirie gets to the final three, she wins."

The main switch that flipped was when even Cirie's ally Rizo was on board to take her out: "If I'm sitting at the end with Cirie Fields, she's clean sweeping this jury."

No lies detected, there.

Even on her way out, Cirie showed just how dangerous she could be, lying to Jonathan by saying it was Aubry (and not Rizo) that informed her of the plan to take out Tiffany.

"It's easy to kind of twist Jonathan up," she told us, and sure enough, the second Cirie dropped that lie, Jonathan morphed into a mind-controlled Reggie Jackson from *The Naked Gun* chanting "I must kill the Queen" over and over.

This entire situation was hilarious because Rizo desperately wanted Cirie out on this vote, yet could not clear Aubry by telling Jonathan and Joe that it was actually *him* that squealed about the Tiffany plan because then they would have been mad at him instead. Cirie backed her own ally into a corner on that one. Brilliant.

What made this last-minute Aubry vs. Cirie battle so intriguing is these were two off-island buddies and former *Game Changers* castmates having to put their friendship aside to play the game. Which meant gunning for each other. And you saw that dynamic play out beautifully as they cast their votes.

"You're the best *Survivor* player of all time," Aubry said after writing Cirie's name down. "You're better than Sandra. You're better than Tony. And I am so honored to call you a friend."

Meanwhile, Cirie joked while voting for Aubry: "We can't keep meeting this way. I love you."

In the end, Cirie had her torch snuffed for the fifth, and likely final, time. And she put the perfect cap on her *Survivor* career with a few pre-snuff words.

"Well, Jeff. Can I just say thank you, Jeff, for some of the best years of my life? I am forever grateful for what *Survivor* has done for me. I don't even have the words to express how grateful and thankful I am for finding out that there is so much more to life than what I knew from sitting on my couch and watching TV."

Not as grateful as we are. Not only did we get to enjoy Cirie on five seasons of *Survivor*, but we also watched her win *The Traitors*, sus out Stephenie's terrible lying on *Snake in the Grass*, deal with Felicia cutting her toenails on *Big Brother*, and lose at fire on *Australian Survivor**.* I'd say her getting up off that couch was just as good for us as her.

So that leaves us with a final five heading into the finale. The entire edit has been pointing to an Aubry win. Tiffany has a great shot with the jury, but it's hard to imagine the others letting her get there (especially if there is no final four fire-making). It's equally hard to imagine Tiffany winning after getting such an invisible edit for the first month of the season.

As impressive as Rizo has been for a second straight season, it also appears for a second straight season that players out there have not been wildly impressed with his game. (Although they should be, especially considering what massive targets the *Survivor 49* players were as complete mysteries heading into the season.)

Joe? As much as I think folks like Joe off the island, everyone out there has been rolling their eyes at how strategically stubborn he can be. Even with allies on the jury, he would seem to be a long shot. Jonathan is a different story. He seems to be playing a more active and fluid game — one that even his enemies might respect. But it's hard to see him besting Aubry or Tiffany in a final vote.

But what the hell do I know? We'll see it play out soon enough! We'll have a few exclusive goodies headed your way before the finale, so keep your eyes peeled for those, and also make sure to open up our last *Survivor 50* Mystery Box of the season, filled with behind-the-scenes treats. Enjoy finale week as I get back in the kitchen to cook up one last scoop of the crispy.
