Sydney Sweeney reaffirmed that she is "so deeply proud of" her new movie Christy after it struggled at the domestic box office in its opening weekend
"So yes I’m proud. why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact," Sweeney wrote on Instagram on Monday, Nov. 10

Sydney Sweeney is responding to her boxing movie's poor box office performance.
Christy, a biopic of real-life boxer Christy Martin, made only $1.3 million at the domestic box office after opening in 2,011 theaters across the country on Nov. 7 and ranked 11th among all movies over the weekend.
"I am so deeply proud of this movie," Sweeney, 28, wrote on Instagram on Monday, Nov. 10, as she shared a carousel of behind-the-scenes photos from her movie Christy on Instagram.
The actress wrote that she is "proud to represent someone as strong and resilient as Christy Martin" and described making the movie as "one of the greatest honors of my life."
"thank you to everyone who saw, felt, and believed and will believe in this story for years to come. if Christy gave even one woman the courage to take her first step toward safety, then we will have succeeded," Sweeney wrote on Instagram on Nov. 10. "so yes I’m proud. why? because we don’t always just make art for numbers, we make it for impact. and christy has been the most impactful project of my life. thank you Christy. i love you."

Martin, the subject of Sweeney's new movie, is an International Boxing Hall of Fame member who competed professionally between 1989 and 2011. Christy follows her journey into boxing and the abuse she endured from her husband and trainer, James Martin, whom Ben Foster plays in the film.
"this film stands for survival, courage, and hope," Sweeney wrote elsewhere in her Instagram post. "through our campaigns, we’ve helped raise awareness for so many affected by domestic violence. we all signed on to this film with the belief that christy’s story could save lives."

Sweeney has said in recent weeks that she identified the domestic violence storyline at the heart of Christy as "a very personal issue that’s important to me." When she appeared at Variety's Power of Women event on Oct. 29 to accept an award, the actress told an audience that portraying Martin in the movie "taught me that surviving isn't the end of the story."
"It is the beginning of reclaiming it," she said in that speech. "And to every young girl out there, I hope that you know that your power is already within you. You don't have to wait for permission to be brave."
Christy is in theaters now.
