The 2026 action-thriller film was released on Prime Video on Feb. 25, with the actress starring as former pirate Ercell “Bloody Mary” Bodden. Having traded her violent past for a quiet life with her family in an island called Cayman Brac, Bodden’s hard-won peace is shattered when her former captain, Connor (Karl Urban), resurfaces, seeking revenge.

“I did not know anything about females who were pirates,” Chopra Jonas, who researched the lives of real-life figures like Grace O’Malley and Zheng Yi Sao, told Esquire in January 2026.

She continued, “I didn’t know that was a concept that actually happened or that women had captained their own ships at a time where piracy — real piracy — was not the Disney version of it. It was scary, it was bloody, it was brutal.”

Following the tragic murder of her husband, T.H. (Ismael Cruz Cordova), at the hands of Connor, Ercell escapes to the intricate bluff cave system where she's hidden weapons, goods and her coveted gold.

Though she weakened the captain's army with a hidden explosion at their camp, Connor still manages to find her safe haven. But the "Bloody Mary" anticipated his arrival and set up multiple traps throughout the caves, taking out his remaining men one by one.

Does Captain Connor find Ercell’s gold?

Despite uncovering her secret hideout, Captain Connor does not find Ercell's hidden treasure.

Before he has a chance to attack, she sends her young son, Isaac (Vedanten Naidoo), away on a boat to look for help. Viewers later learn that the former pirate hid most of her gold and jewels beneath the flooring of her vessel, meaning the treasure Connor was after was only a small portion of what she had collected.

Isaac is able to get off the island unscathed and finds the gold in his boat.

What happens to Connor?

Though it seems like the captain is only after Ercell for her gold, it's later revealed that she has a bounty on her head. The price, however, isn't money, but freedom. Like Ercell, Connor also wants to leave his life of criminality behind and find peace.

At least that's what he told his men. In reality, it turns out Connor could never get over Ercell's betrayal and her theft of his treasure.

As a result, he attempts to take her down on his own in a one-on-one battle on the top of the bluff (hence, the film's name). Their fight is physically brutal, with both parties taking intense blows and coming close to death.

But it's Ercell who comes out on top thanks to the help of her husband's sister Lizzy (Safia Oakley-Green), who shoots him. Though she misses, the distraction gives the former pirate just enough time to stab and kill her old captain in the heart.

Ercell survives Connor's attack, but she doesn't do so without some major injuries — including a gunshot wound to her leg. After the fight on the bluff is over, Lizzy rushes to her side and comes to her aid.

But Ercell's struggles aren't over. Before he died, Connor lit a pyre at the top of the cliff, which signaled the British navy and threatened to upend Ercell's life of peace. As she watches the ships come closer to shore, Ercell grapples with the decision to stay and be caught or flee the island for good to seek peace elsewhere.

The Bluff ends on a cliffhanger, with viewers not knowing which path Ercell chooses.

Will there be a sequel to The Bluff?

Prime Video has not confirmed a sequel for The Bluff. However, director and co-writer Frank E. Flowers told ScreenRant in February 2026 that though he aimed to give viewers "a whole meal with this movie," he also hoped to have the opportunity to tell more of the characters' stories.

"[We wanted to give them] something fresh and interesting that would leave them wanting more, while also thinking, 'Man, that was pretty bada--,' " Flowers explained.

He continued, "There's a lot more story to tell — there's always a lot more story to tell — especially when you have people like Priyanka and Karl, where there are pages of deep character stuff that was never filmed, but we know it, and it comes across in the performance."
