**Warning: This article contains spoilers from *Daredevil: Born Again* season 2, episode 4, "Gloves Off."**

Wilson Fisk and the actor behind him, Vincent D'Onofrio, are experiencing some intense déjà vu.

On the original *Daredevil* series, which ran on Netflix for three seasons from 2015-2018, Fisk's love, Vanessa (Ayelet Zurer), had a near-death experience. Now on *Daredevil: Born Again* season 2, things take a similarly dark turn for the queen of Fisk's underworld.

In the fourth episode, "Gloves Off," Bullseye (Wilson Bethel) decides to take his retribution at Fisk's high-profile boxing match. While the horned Defender of Hell's Kitchen (Charlie Cox) attempts to mitigate the damage, Vanessa is left bleeding and unresponsive on the ring's matte. Her fate is unclear, but we can probably tell where this is going.

"He's devastated," D'Onofrio tells ** of the Fisk we'll see in back half of season 2. "He's always been broken, he's always been incredibly narcissistic, and that midway point moving forward, he becomes more of a loose cannon than he has ever been before. Considering the position that he's in as mayor, it's a dangerous thing."

When D'Onofrio and Zurer performed comparable scenes together on Netflix's *Daredevil*, "there was more acting," he says, because they didn't know each other all that well at the time. This time around on *Born Again*, "Those are real emotions," he notes.

"The idea of a friend getting hurt, especially someone as incredible as Ayelet, it affected me, like a good friend that's been hurt," he says. "I know that might sound silly to some people, but when you get invested in a character or, more than that, when you get invested in a story and you've done emotional work with your scene partner — in this case, Ayelet — for years and years and years, there's no acting required."

In a separate interview with EW, Bethel addressed the big cliffhanger. "It's just firing on all cylinders," he teases of the next few episodes. "I just think it's some of the best stuff that we've done on the show. Episode 5, I think, is an incredible episode of TV, partly in how complicated it is."

New episodes of *Daredevil: Born Again* drop Tuesdays on Disney+ at 9 p.m. ET. The finale is scheduled for May 5.
