When their mother Debra Newell married con artist and attempted murderer John Meehan, her daughters Jacquelyn and Terra Newell quickly saw through his web of lies.

After meeting on a dating site, Debra and Meehan — whom she believed was a doctor — married within months. However, Debra’s daughters — especially Jacquelyn — were suspicious of Meehan’s story. After hiring a private investigator, they discovered that Meehan was not a doctor. Instead, he was a former nurse who’d lost his license in multiple states and been convicted of crimes like stalking and felony possession of a firearm.

Debra left Meehan once she learned of his criminal history. However, Meehan turned violent, stalking Debra and attempting to stab Terra. Terra successfully defended herself and ultimately killed Meehan in self-defense.

The case inspired the viral podcast Dirty John, as well as the subsequent Bravo series of the same name. Terra later penned a 2019 essay for PEOPLE about how she now marks the anniversary of Meehan’s attack each year on Aug. 20 as a celebration of her survival.

“If you’ve seen the show or have listened to the podcast Dirty John, you know what happened next. I survived and killed my attacker,” she wrote. “Three years later and this day is now a celebration of my life. A day to show other women they can fight back. A day to educate others on the red flags from master manipulators. A day to show others there is life after a diagnosis of PTSD.”

So, where are Debra Newell’s daughters Jacquelyn and Terra Newell now? Here’s what to know about their lives today, 10 years after “Dirty John” Meehan attacked Terra.

Interior designer Debra was a four-time divorcee when she met Meehan — who told her he was an anesthesiologist and had worked for Doctors Without Borders in Iraq — on a dating site for singles over 50.

She told PEOPLE that she was “infatuated” with Meehan almost immediately — but her adult children were not impressed with him, especially daughters Jacquelyn and Terra.

“When I first met John Meehan, his scrubs were torn. I thought he was a fake. I just had a very bad feeling about him,” Jacquelyn said in the Oxygen documentary Dirty John: The Dirty Truth, adding that she noticed his fingernails were dirty, unlike most doctors and medical professionals who have strict handwashing procedures.

Terra found Meehan’s nursing degree — not his medical degree, which he never had — during a visit to her mother’s home. Meehan’s reaction made her suspicious of him.

“He was accusing me of wanting to take my mom away from him and also accusing me of snooping through his things, which I didn’t,” she said on the Dirty John podcast. “But because he said that it made me question, ‘What is he trying to hide?’ ”

Still, Debra and Meehan moved in together after dating for just a month — and the relationship didn’t slow down from there. The pair eloped in Las Vegas in December 2014, just months after their first date.

Meehan was nicknamed “Dirty John” and “Filthy John” by those who knew him before he met Debra.

According to The Los Angeles Times, Meehan was known as a master manipulator. He sold drugs, jumped in front of moving cars and even put glass in a fast food order to get settlement money. He failed out of law school and used false names to sign up for credit cards.

In 1990, Meehan married a nurse anesthetist named Tonia Sells Bales, with whom he shared two daughters. He got his nurse anesthetist license like his wife, but started abusing his privileges and taking the drugs that he was supposed to be giving patients, according to the outlet.

He and Bales divorced in 2001. He was later convicted of menacing for harassing Bales when they separated and given a suspended sentence, per The Los Angeles Times.

In 2002, Meehan went to prison in Michigan for 17 months after pleading guilty to drug theft charges, per A&E. Meehan’s drug theft habit and addiction led his nursing license to be suspended in multiple states, according to Oxygen.

Before meeting Debra, Meehan briefly was involved with multimillionaire Brazilian author Merileide Anderson, according to the outlet. Anderson got brain surgery in the United States and woke up to see Meehan at her bedside in the hospital, giving her his number and saying he was her anesthesiologist.

“He has a type,” Julia Bowman, a police investigator, told PEOPLE in 2018. “He would meet as many women as possible and then find the one that is the wealthiest, and then attach to that person.”

During their relationship, she almost wired $10 million to him before reneging at the insistence of a friend, Anderson said in Dirty John: The Dirty Truth. However, once they split, he began stalking her and sending intimate photographs to her family, per The Los Angeles Times.

He eventually pleaded guilty to stalking and felony possession of a firearm, according to the outlet. He was released from prison just days before his first date with Debra.

Debra’s daughters grew suspicious of Meehan

Jacquelyn was the first to urge Debra to distance herself from Meehan.

Upon finding out that Meehan and Debra married, Jacquelyn was upset. She and several of her siblings hired a private investigator to look into Meehan, and their concerns turned to fear for their mother’s safety.

“It was alarming to find out she had married him at that point, because it just made it so much harder to end things,” Jacquelyn said in Dirty John: The Dirty Truth. “It was the start of when I really felt like we were in danger … I was looking over my shoulder everywhere I went the whole time I was with him. He was a ticking time bomb.”

Jacquelyn put a tracker on her mother’s Tesla and used it to monitor Meehan’s whereabouts, since he only ever drove Debra’s car. She revealed in Dirty John: The Dirty Truth that he’d leave for about an hour, telling Debra he was going to work, and come home just an hour later after Debra left for her own job at her interior design firm. From there, he’d spend hours sleeping and playing video games.

Like Jacquelyn, Terra feared Meehan, but told The Los Angeles Times that she wanted to try to develop a relationship with her stepfather.

“Terra’s a lot more like my mom, where she wants to believe the best in people rather than see any of the bad things,” Jacquelyn said in the Dirty John podcast. “I could probably be a little bit more like them, it would do me some good, but I just couldn’t see anything good in him, just all bad.”

Meehan attacked Terra in August 2016

After Debra’s children revealed what they learned about Meehan, including his criminal history, she filed for an annulment and Meehan filed for divorce. After a brief reconciliation, Debra left and hid from Meehan in April 2016, leading him to turn violent: He set her Tesla on fire, stalked her and sent nude photos of her to her own family.

“I lived in constant fear,” Debra told PEOPLE.

On Aug. 20, 2016, when Terra planned to see a Jason Aldean concert, Meehan waited outside of her Newport Beach, Calif., apartment. When Terra came outside, Meehan attacked her with a knife he’d hidden in a Del Taco bag, per The Los Angeles Times.

Terra, a longtime fan of The Walking Dead, used tactics she learned from the show to defend herself, including biting Meehan like the character Rick Grimes did to an enemy in the series. She kicked Meehan’s knife out of his hand, then grabbed it herself and stabbed him repeatedly, including in the eye — similar to how survivors killed “walkers” by aiming for their heads in the AMC series.

Meehan was hospitalized and placed on life support. He died four days later at 57 years old.

Since Dirty John, Terra has become a yoga instructor, podcast host and life coach, focusing on helping survivors to overcome trauma.

Terra has hosted a number of podcasts, including Time Out With Terra, Survivor Squad and Terra’s Baddy Club. She is also an advocate for ethical and sensitive true crime content creation.

Meanwhile, Jacquelyn is quite private and has no social media accounts. While she participated in the Dirty John podcast and the Dirty John: The Dirty Truth documentary, she did not appear on camera.

In a November 2018 interview with Forbes, Debra said that her daughter took over her interior design business in Irvine, Calif.
