William H. Macy spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about his marriage to Felicity Huffman while attending The Running Man premiere on Sunday, Nov. 9

The actor and Huffman have been married since 1997 and share two daughters: Sophia and Georgia

“She's the best thing that's ever happened to me," Macy tells PEOPLE says of Huffman

William H. Macy remains smitten with his wife, Felicity Huffman, 28 years after they exchanged their vows.

While attending the premiere of the upcoming movie The Running Man at AMC Lincoln Square in New York City on Sunday, Nov. 9, Macy, 75, spoke exclusively to PEOPLE about the secret to his romance with Huffman, 62.

The couple — who tied the knot in 1997 after first meeting in the early 1980s at New York City’s Atlantic Theater Company — share two daughters, Sophia and Georgia, the latter whom attended Sunday's premiere with her dad.

Revealing to PEOPLE that his relationship with Huffman is effortless as he’s “never had to work at it," Macy continues, "I'm crazy for her. She's the best thing that's ever happened to me, and she's so alive, so evolving, she's always striving. She keeps me on my toes.”

Macy reveals that shared interests are a major part of their marriage, alongside supporting each other in their career endeavors.

“We share the theater and showbiz and storytelling that's really at the core of our relationship,” he says. “And I don't recommend this at home, but we talk the talk and walk the walk."

“She's shooting a thing up in Toronto now called Doc, and I read her scripts and talk to her, and she reads my scripts and we talk about it and we critique each other,” the actor continues, adding, “Somehow it works.”

Macy stood by his wife as she served 11 days in prison for her role in the college admissions scandal back in October 2019. She was also sentenced to 250 hours of community service and was on supervised release for one year.

The Shameless actor had gushed about their “fairytale marriage” during an interview on Sunday Today in January that year, adding, “I loved her the second I saw her.”

It was revealed in early 2024 that Huffman would be making a return to acting. Having made an appearance on The Good Doctor and voiced a character on Supreme: The Battle for Roe, she guest-starred in Criminal Minds: Evolution.

Huffman is now in the Fox medical series Doc as Dr. Joan Ridley, while Macy is starring alongside Glen Powell in the remake of The Running Man.

The original movie starred Arnold Schwarzenegger as Ben Richards, a former captain who is arrested and recruited to appear on the government-run game show called The Running Man.

"The only movie that I always wanted to have redone of my movies was The Running Man," said Schwarzenegger at the 2025 premiere.

The Running Man is released in theaters on Nov. 14.
