Lily Clarke’s dad accidentally baked her iPad while preparing dinner
The family smelled a “very chemical smell” before realizing what happened
After initial frustration, the moment turned into laughter and a viral TikTok hit
Lily Clarke knew something was wrong when the kitchen filled with a sharp, chemical smell — but she never expected dinner to come with a side of melted technology. What started as an ordinary evening at home quickly turned into a viral TikTok moment after her dad accidentally baked her iPad along with their meal.
“We had been out that afternoon so [we] had some ready meals for dinner,” Clarke tells PEOPLE. “His iPad was on top of the surface hanging over the edge, and he put the tray with the food on top of the iPad.”
Clarke says because her dad was wearing an oven glove, he didn’t realize the device was stuck underneath the tray when he lifted it. The tray — and the iPad — went straight into the oven without a second thought.
About 30 minutes later, as the food was nearly cooked, the smell hit them. “We smelt a very chemical smell, and when he took the tray out of the oven, that’s when we realized,” she says.
Instead of a perfectly heated dinner, they were met with the unmistakable sight of an iPad that had just endured 30 minutes at baking temperature. The absurdity of it all set in almost immediately, even if it took a minute to process.
“He was initially very annoyed as iPads are expensive!” Clarke says now.
But the tension didn’t last long in their kitchen. “After about five minutes, we all couldn’t stop laughing at how ridiculous the situation was and how silly he had been,” she shares.
In the now-viral TikTok, viewers were quick to notice her dad’s genuine disappointment, which only made the moment more endearing. His visible sadness, paired with the sheer randomness of the accident, struck a chord with millions who have had their own technology mishaps.
Clarke says she never expected the clip to travel far beyond her immediate circle. “I posted it because I thought it was hilarious and initially just thought that my friends would have a laugh watching it,” she explains.
Instead, the video quickly gained traction, racking up views from strangers who couldn’t believe what they were seeing. “I was very surprised at how much attention it gained,” she admits.
For many viewers, the story felt painfully relatable. “I think people are always doing stupid things that break their devices, so many people resonated on that level,” Clarke says.

At the same time, she understands why this particular blunder felt uniquely unbelievable. “I also think this was quite a unique situation that people just couldn’t believe actually happened,” she adds.
In the end, there was a practical resolution to the mishap. Clarke says her dad eventually replaced the iPad, and thankfully, it was covered by insurance.
