Zoey Deutch is the undisputed queen of the summer with three new movies: Voicemails for Isabelle, Minions & Monsters and Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass
The actress shares her hilarious "vacationmaxxing" hack amid her busy schedule
She also opens up about her supportive parents, actress Lea Thompson and director Howard Deutch
Zoey Deutch knows how to make the most of her rare downtime. On a recent June night the actress had her best friend over to her L.A. home for some whirlwind “vacationmaxxing” — which included climbing into bed and ordering Mexican and Thai food.
“She was like, ‘You got home, and within 20 seconds you showered, put your pimple patches on, poured a glass of Barolo, put on Minions,' ” recalls Deutch, 31. “I was like, ‘Let's feel like we're having a weekend away for one hour.'”
If Deutch's free time is lacking, it's because her professional life is booming.
In June she released the rom-com (or “rom-cry,” as she calls it) Voicemails for Isabelle, which soared to No. 1 on Netflix the week of release. “I remember the exact spot where I was reading [the script],” she says of the tale of a young pastry chef grieving the loss of her sister when a stranger (Nick Robinson) enters her life. “I was on the beach with my childhood friends that I've known my whole life, and I was sobbing.”

She follows that up on July 1 with a voice role in the riotous Minions & Monsters, the next installment in the animated franchise (an experience she calls “one of the coolest acting classes I've ever been a part of”), before closing out her summer as the lead in Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass, an R-rated romp about a bride-to-be who sets out to bed a very famous actor.

They're wildly disparate projects—and that's by design. “I enjoy doing a completely different genre after I finish one thing,” she says. “I don't want to do the same thing again ever.”
Deutch, who got Oscar buzz last year for her performance as actress Jean Seberg in the Richard Linklater film Nouvelle Vague, is “a pro's pro,” raves Gail Daughtry costar and cowriter Ken Marino. “She can bounce between very serious stuff or rom-coms or whatever.”
The daughter of Back to the Future star Lea Thompson and Pretty in Pink director Howard Deutch, the actress is fulfilling a lifelong dream.

“I don't remember a time when I didn't want to act,” says Deutch, who adds that her parents always encouraged her. “They're incredibly supportive and present, and I couldn't be luckier. I think that's one of the best things for a crazy industry like this.”
Deutch built her career steadily, starting with guest spots on shows like NCIS and Switched at Birth and roles in movies like Vampire Academy and Dirty Grandpa before finding a project that propelled her to the next level.
That was the beloved 2018 rom-com Set It Up opposite Glen Powell. “I was trying for them to say yes to me for a very long time. I don't think that I was the first, second, third choice for that,” says Deutch, who holds no “master plan” for her career but believes in combining manifestation and action to make things happen.

To that end, she's putting out her next wish: “I have never done a psychological thriller or a horror movie, and I would love to do that.”
At some point down the road, she'll also be tying the knot with her fiancé, actor and comedian Jimmy Tatro, 34. The two got engaged last June — a milestone Deutch marked on Instagram by celebrating their “one year engagementversary.”
How did she know he was the One? “Like they say, when you know, you know,” she says with a smile. “I think that's true.”
Voicemails for Isabelle is now streaming on Netflix, Minions & Monsters is now playing in theaters and Gail Daughtry and the Celebrity Sex Pass hits theaters on Friday, July 10.
